VSUM provides
powerful design, monitoring and tuning capabilities for VSE VSAM
catalogs and data sets. VSUM provides five major functions, which
will simplify many of the routine and complex tasks necessary for
effective VSAM data set design and management. VSUM can be executed
online or in batch mode.

• A data set space utilization analysis and backup option to
interrogate a complete or user-specified part of a VSAM data
set and produce a variety of valuable statistics
• Batch data set analysis reports can be generated from statistics
that can optionally be saved by VSUM
